Shillong, April 4: Political leaders across India and the northeastern states have strongly criticized remarks made by Bangladesh’s interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus, who invited China to expand its influence in the region. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma labeled Yunus’ statement as “offensive and strongly condemnable,” while Tipra Motha Chief Pradyot Manikya urged the Indian government to adopt a more aggressive stance.
Meghalaya Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh also weighed in, describing Bangladesh’s current regime as “unstable” and “tentative.” He emphasized the need for India to prepare adequately for challenges posed by its populous and unstable neighbor. Lyngdoh stated, “The state government is alive to the need for us to prepare adequately to the challenges of a hugely populated neighboring country, which is very unstable.”

On the issue of border security, Lyngdoh highlighted ongoing efforts by the Union Home Ministry and the Border Security Force (BSF) to address concerns. He noted that the BSF has been repeatedly instructed to remain vigilant, reflecting the seriousness of the situation. Lyngdoh added, “The CM himself has flagged these issues before the Union Home Ministry, and with the latest issue being raised by Bangladesh about their tying up with China, I’m sure the Centre will live up to our expectations and facilitate states in the Northeast to have adequate safety measures in view of the growing threat from across the borders.”
The remarks come amid heightened concerns over Bangladesh’s invitation to China for economic expansion, which has raised alarms about potential security implications for India’s northeastern states. Leaders in the region are calling for increased vigilance and support from the central government to address these emerging challenges.
