Paul Lyngdoh: Meghalaya mustn’t go the Punjab way on drug abuse

Must read

Shillong, June 26: Meghalaya stands at a critical juncture, facing a daunting crisis of drug abuse that threatens to undermine the potential of its youth, akin to the devastating impact witnessed in Punjab.

Speaking on the occasion of the International Day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking, Paul Lyngdoh, Minister in-charge of Social Welfare, said unless the society comes together the results could be grim just like in Punjab.

He said in Punjab, once renowned for its prowess in sports and defence, the state has now fallen victim to drug abuse and destroying the potential of its youth. Lyngdoh urged Meghalaya to heed Punjab’s lessons, emphasizing that the state must act decisively to prevent a similar crisis from taking root.

Lyngdoh said Meghalaya no longer remains a transit point for drugs into northeastern states but warned that the menace of drug abuse has now permeated every corner of the state. He stressed the urgency for collective action, urging citizens, organizations, and stakeholders to unite against drug abuse.

In a call to action, Lyngdoh asserted that Meghalaya’s society “is moving to a realization that we need to escalate and elevate our engagement on the problem of drug trafficking and drug use, it is a timely reminder that society has a choice of either being a victor or a victim of the circumstances.”

He further said that any blame game should stop, despite the perceived gaps in policy making, policing or functioning of the social welfare department and everyone should contribute and suggestions are welcome to fight the menace collectively.

He advocated for the revival of the Village Defense Force (VDF) as a pivotal step in combating drug trafficking, seeking support from the central government to bolster these efforts.

The minister’s remarks underscored the gravity of the situation, signaling a crucial moment for Meghalaya to fortify its defenses against the menace of drug abuse and trafficking.
