Shillong, Jan 4: The Press Club of India (PCI) has strongly condemned the brutal murder of Mukesh Chandrakar, a 31-year-old freelance journalist from Bijapur, Chhattisgarh.
Chandrakar, who was reported missing on January 1, was found dead on Friday. His body was discovered in a septic tank on a contractor’s property, according to local police.
Renowned for his fearless reporting on corruption, tribal rights, and insurgent violence in the conflict-ridden Bastar region, Chandrakar also ran a widely followed YouTube channel, Bastar Junction. His work shed light on the struggles of local communities in one of India’s most sensitive regions.
The PCI expressed its deep sorrow and extended condolences to Chandrakar’s family and friends, describing his death as a significant loss to the journalistic fraternity. The organization called for swift, time-bound action to bring the perpetrators to justice and urged the Press Council of India to take cognizance of the case. The PCI also appealed to the Chhattisgarh state government to act decisively.
“This impunity must end,” the statement read. “The state government should urgently consider enacting a law to protect journalists, as demanded by local reporters for years.”
The Press Club of India announced plans to organize a condolence-cum-protest meeting early next week at its premises in New Delhi. The gathering will call for justice for Chandrakar and highlight the ongoing threats faced by journalists in the region.
