Itanagar, June 12: Pema Khandu is set to continue as Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh after being officially re-elected as the state BJP’s legislature leader in a meeting held today in the state capital.
Khandu was unanimously chosen as the legislature party leader in the presence of two central party observers, Ravi Shankar Prasad and Tarun Chugh, who arrived in Itanagar for the occasion.
Khandu will now meet with Governor KT Parnaik to stake his claim to form the government. He and his cabinet colleagues are expected to be sworn in on Thursday, June 13.
The Pema Khandu-led BJP secured a landslide victory in the recently held Arunachal Pradesh assembly elections, winning 46 seats in the 60-member Assembly.
Khandu, the son of former Chief Minister Late Dorjee Khandu, had previously quit the Congress party to join the regional People’s Party of Arunachal, an ally of the BJP. He was suspended from the Congress along with six other MLAs, but proved to be a strategic leader, taking 43 MLAs to the BJP. This overnight transition made the BJP the largest party in the 60-member Assembly, up from its previous count of 11 MLAs.
Prior to this, Khandu had served as the Minister of Tourism, Urban Development and Water Resources in the Nabam Tuki government.
