Shillong, Nov 23: Dr. Mehtab Chandee A Sangma, the newly elected legislator from Gambegre, has won the seat with overwhelming margin of over 4500 votes. As for the reason for such a big win, she has attributed it to people’s need for development and change.
“The message is loud and clear that people have voted for change today, people have voted for development. This is what we as a party, the leadership encourages and this is what we have been promoting and I think the message is clear,” Dr. Mehtab Chandee said after her win.
She noted that the National People’s Party (NPP) had never won the seat, so the win is a clear sign that “people of Gambegre have voted for change”.
“I think the whole of Garo Hill and Meghalaya is experiencing that right now with NPP at the government and (we) will do more and do our best to ensure that we always give the best to the people,” he stressed.
She secured 12,678 votes of the total 30,086 votes polled in the November 13 polling, the results of which were declared on Saturday. For the record, this is the highest number of votes a candidate has received in the constituency, so far. Saleng A. Sangma, the three-time MLA from the constituency polled 7260 votes in 2013, 7291 in 2018, and 11,252 in 2013.
Meanwhile, NPP national president and Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma, said they are happy and thanked the people of Gambegre for their support. Echoing similar thoughts as of his spouse, he said people have voted for development.
“We are very happy as a party and would like to thank the people of Gambegre for their support in this bye-election. It is very very heartening to see that people have voted for development and we want to assure the people of Gambegre that we will do everything in our capacity to make sure that we are able to fulfil our promises and deliver. There are many challenges but we will do our best to serve the people of Gambegre,” he said.
He also thanked all the leaders, party workers, MLAs, MDCs of the party who have worked very hard to support the candidature of Dr Mehtab Chandee A Sangma.
