SHILLONG, JULY 3: The Meghalaya Minister in-charge of Public Health Engineering (PHE) Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar has expressed dissatisfaction over the implementation of the Laitkor Greater Water Supply Scheme (LGWSS).
“I am not happy to see the progress of work and I have decided to call a meeting on Monday as I don’t want to see the people suffer due to the non-performance of the contractor,” said Tongkhar after conducting an inspection to the project site at Laitkor.
He also warned of action against the slow progress and said, “we will take action even to the extent of cancelling the work also. If the contractor is not interested, I will request him to leave the work and leave it to the department to find a way out because we cannot allow this to happen.”
The project, costing Rs 28 crore was started in November, 2020 and the targeted time for completion was 2 years.
“The contractor should have completed 70 percent of the work by now but unfortunately when we went to see not even 10 percent of the work had been completed. Hardly Rs 30 lakh out of Rs 28 crore was spent so far,” he said.
The minister further said that the reason for many projects not to be completed in time was due to delay of the contractor, who would later request for price escalation. “So before it is too late I decided to conduct the inspection. I will continue to do this as a minister. I am responsible to see that the project that has been allotted is completed on time,” he said.
