Boko, Dec 23: The winter is here and so is the picnic season in Assam. Stretching from December to mid-February, this is the time for families and friends to venture to picturesque natural locations to celebrate. But these outings can often be marred by accidents, some of which result in fatalities. One such accident occurred on Monday at the Aradonga picnic area under Athiabari Police Outpost in Meghalaya, located along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
56-year-old Gautam Ganguly, who works in a departmental store in Adabari, lost his life in the stream while on a picnic with his colleagues at the Aradonga picnic area. According to police, the deceased reportedly lost his balance while near the stream, slipped, and fell to his death.
A team led by officer-in-charge of Athiabari Police Outpost, Samuel Sangma, quickly reached the spot and recovered the body and arranged for its transfer to Riangdo in West Khasi Hills District for a post-mortem examination. Hahim Police Outpost in-charge, Lakhi Nandan Boro, also visited the scene to investigate.
According to Boro, a group of approximately 60 individuals from Adabari, Guwahati, had travelled to Aradonga in two buses for a picnic. Ganguly, a resident of Hatat Colony, Rest Camp, Pandu in Guwahati, was among them.
Colleagues of Ganguly revealed that the group worked together in a departmental store in Adabari. On Monday, they had come to Aradonga with their employer for a picnic. While preparations for cooking were underway, Ganguly wandered off. Shortly afterward, locals informed the group of a dead body found in a nearby stream. Upon inspection, the body was identified as Ganguly.
Aradonga village, located in Meghalaya’s West Khasi Hills District, lies adjacent to Assam’s Kamrup District near Hahim. Known for its scenic beauty, the area is surrounded by lush trees, towering mountains, and flowing rivers and streams. It has become a popular picnic destination, attracting thousands of visitors from Assam annually. The stream at Aradonga eventually merges with the Singra River, a tributary of the mighty Brahmaputra.
However, the area’s natural terrain also poses inherent risks, which can turn fatal if one doesn’t take caution while venturing out.
