Guwahati, Dec 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday hailed Northeast India as the driving force of the nation’s growth in the 21st century, calling the region the “Ashtalakshmi” of the nation. “With the blessings of Lord Krishna and Ashtalakshmi, India will see the Northeast setting a new paradigm of development,” Modi said. He highlighted the region’s pivotal role in India’s growth story, aligning it with the broader rise of Asia in the 21st century.

The Prime Minister underscored the shift in India’s growth focus from traditional metros like Mumbai and Bengaluru to emerging urban centres such as Guwahati, Agartala, Shillong, and Imphal. He said events like the Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav play a crucial role in showcasing the Northeast’s potential to the world.

Government Support and Development
Modi emphasized the government’s commitment to developing the region, citing the allocation of over ₹5 lakh crore to the Northeast in the past decade under a special policy mandating 10% of central ministry budgets for the region. “We are connecting the Northeast with the trinity of Emotion, Economy, and Ecology,” he said, adding that infrastructure development is laying a strong foundation for the future.

The “One District, One Product” initiative is promoting the region’s unique offerings globally. “I promote the mantra of Vocal for Local for Northeast products,” Modi said, urging citizens to integrate these goods into their lives.

Cultural Significance
Drawing parallels between the eight states of the Northeast and the eight forms of Goddess Lakshmi, Modi celebrated the region’s cultural diversity and significance. The event featured exhibitions of local products, cuisines, and crafts, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich heritage.

He also extended an invitation to the people of the Northeast to participate in the Madhavpur Mela in Gujarat in 2025, which commemorates the marriage of Lord Krishna and Goddess Rukmini, linking the region to India’s broader cultural tapestry.

Vision for the Future
Modi expressed confidence that the Northeast’s art, craft, and products would find their place in global markets, creating new opportunities for its people. “The Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav is not just a celebration; it’s a vision of a brighter future for the Northeast,” he said.

The event was attended by Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and other dignitaries, underscoring the significance of the Northeast in India’s development narrative.
