PM Modi launches ‘PM Vishwakarma’ scheme; All you need to know about it

Shillong, Sep 17: The Centre’s newly announced scheme for artisans, PM Vishwakarma, was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (September 17), on the occasion of Vishwakarma Jayanti or Vishwakarma puja.

Ahead of launching the scheme, PM Modi paid floral tribute to Lord Vishwakarma at India International Convention and Expo Centre in Dwarka.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs had recently allotted Rs 13,000 crore for the scheme. The scheme will be available for traditional craftspeople and artisans for five financial years, from 2023–24 to 2027–28.

Under the scheme, the Vishwakarmas will be registered free of charge through Common Services Centres using the biometric-based PM Vishwakarma portal. They will be provided recognition through the PM Vishwakarma certificate and ID card, skill upgradation involving basic and advanced training, a toolkit incentive of Rs15,000, collateral-free credit support up to Rs1 lakh (first tranche) and Rs 2 lakh (second tranche) at a concessional interest rate of 5 per cent, incentive transactions,transactions and marketing support.

The scheme will provide support to artisans and craftspeople of rural and urban areas across India. Eighteen traditional crafts will be covered under PM Vishwakarma. These include (i) Carpenter; (ii) Boat Maker; (iii) Armourer; (iv) Blacksmith; (v) Hammer and Tool Kit Maker; (vi) Locksmith; (vii) Goldsmith; (viii) Potter; (ix) Sculptor, Stone breaker; (x) Cobbler (Shoesmith/Footwear artisan); (xi) Mason (Rajmistri); (xii) Basket/Mat/Broom Maker/Coir Weaver; (xiii) Doll & Toy Maker (Traditional); (xiv) Barber; (xvi) Washerman; (xviiii) Tailor; and (xviii) Fishing Net Maker.

Prahlad Singh Patel had visited CM Conrad Sangma’s official residence in Shillong.
