Shillong, Feb 22: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take part in a road show in Shillong on Friday (Feb 24, 2023).

Speaking to reporters, BJP state president Ernest Mawrie informed that this is the first time that a Prime Minister will join in for a road show in the city. Mawrie informed that PM Modi will land in Upper Shillong Helipad then he will travel to Jhalupara point and then straight to State Central Library to pay floral tribute to freedom fighters, U Tirot Sing. Thereafter, the PM will proceed to Khyndai Lad where he will attend a public gathering at Khyndai Lad (Police Bazar).

Mawrie informed that the program has been scheduled at an hour that will not cause hindrance to the general public. “We have keep this program from 11AM till 1:30 PM so that it will not disturb the people who are going to office and some other purpose and especially the school children,” he said.

Adding to the State president’s statement, BJP legislator from Pynthorumkhrah AL Hek said the Prime Minister himself said that there should not be any hindrance for the school and college students. “He(Modi) said by the time he comes to Shillong all the students will be in the classroom, the moment he leaves, the school will be over… this shows the positive thoughts of our PM for the convenience of the public and the people,” said Hek.

The fallout of any high profile visit dignitary means the streets of Shillong are filled with ‘No-entry’ signs, blaring horns, rattling vehicles stuck in first gear, kilometre long snail-paced traffic, irritated drivers, police officials and constables. This situation was seen in the last visit of Prime Minister to the State on December 18, 2022, wherein there was a nightmarish traffic congestion in Shillong.

However, Mawrie informed that the situation will not repeat as the party has taken care of this along with the district administration. “The district administration will not seal all the roads, only particular roads will be sealed for some time,” informed the State president. He also informed that a meeting was held with the district administration so that there will be no inconvenience to the public.

On asked why the party chose Khyndailad to hold their public gathering, Mawrie informed that it is a central location for all the BJP candidates- South Shillong, West Shillong, Pynthorumkhrah, North Shillong, East Shillong and Nongthymmai Constituency.

But the party leaders assured that the gathering of the Prime Minister at the centre of the city will not affect the daily lives of daily commuters.
