Shillong, Jan 23: One person was arrested on Thursday for allegedly threatening to plant multiple bombs across Shillong city.
Thirty-seven-year-old Edward Maiong was arrested from his temporary residence at Lower New Colony, Laitumkhrah, following an FIR registered against him, East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem told reporters.
Syiem explained that the FIR, filed on Wednesday, stated that the complainant had received an SMS from an unknown number, threatening to plant multiple bombs within Shillong city. The sender identified himself as a member of the ‘Ri-Bhoi gang.’
After receiving the FIR, a case was registered under Sadar P.S Case No.29(01)2025 u/s 351(4)/353(2)/61(2) and 113(2)(b) BNS Act.
Syiem added that the Special Operation Team (SOT) of East Khasi Hills immediately sprang into action, launching a search operation with assistance from neighboring districts’ police.
“After an overnight operation to identify the suspect, the Special Operation Team was able to locate Edward Maiong at his temporary residence today. The phone used to make the bomb threat has also been recovered and seized,” he said.
However, the SP mentioned that Edward’s links to any militant outfit could not be ruled out at this point, as there is incriminating evidence against him.
The district police are conducting heavy checks at all points in the city, including combing operations and intensified patrolling, to prevent any attempts to disrupt the Republic Day celebrations. He also requested the cooperation of the public.
