Shillong, Jan 2: The State police has requested motorists not to overtake while plying through the Umiam bridge.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Superintendent of Police (City) Vivek Syiem said following the repairing work of the Umiam bridge, which is being carried out round the clock, vehicles are being allowed from both sides (one way) in phases.

“However, it has been noticed that some vehicles overtake while plying through the Umiam Bridge leading to further traffic jam. Hence, in order to ensure smooth and safe passage, motorists are hereby requested not to overtake,” he said.
He also warned that any violation in this regard will be dealt strictly as per the provisions of law.

Furthermore, to decongest the vehicular traffic towards Umiam bridge and to avoid traffic jams, motorists are requested to take the alternate route of their journey via Shillong Bypass, the SP said.
