Dibrugarh, Jan 5: In a tragic incident, a police constable lost his life after being accidentally shot with his service AK-74 rifle in Dibrugarh on Sunday.
The deceased, identified as Madhab Chutia, was serving as the Personal Security Officer (PSO) to the Additional Superintendent of Police.
According to reports, the constable was cleaning his service weapon when he accidentally pulled the trigger. The bullet pierced his chest and struck a television in his house. Chutia was rushed to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) but succumbed to his injuries.
“We have initiated an investigation. Preliminary findings suggest the constable accidentally shot himself while cleaning his AK-74 rifle,” said a police official.
In a similar incident on December 9, 2024, a security guard at an SBI ATM in Dibrugarh fatally injured himself with his service weapon. The guard, identified as Jiten Saikia, accidentally fired a shot at his leg while handling his rifle at his residence on Enajori Path in the Gandhi Nagar area. He sustained critical injuries and succumbed shortly after.
Authorities are urging service personnel to exercise greater caution when handling firearms to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
