Shillong, Feb 26: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Monday demanded an inquiry into the alleged assault by a police officer, for assaulting two of its member at Pynursla Police Station on Saturday.
On February 24, the HYC Ri War Mihngi Circle (Pynursla Sub-Division) had apprehended two trucks carrying buffalo, which was to be illegally transported to Bangladesh.
The HYC members had taken the trucks and their driver to the Pynursla Police Station with the intention to file an FIR. However, on reaching the police station, the 2nd Officer In-charge instead of hearing the complaint, allegedly started physically abusing the HYC members.
A statement issued by HYC said that the police officer dragged and abused them.
Police officer George Dkhar refused to register their complaint and instead abused and physically assaulted the HYC member Lamphrang Khonglam.
They said that the police even threatened them with dire consequence for apprehending the trucks. “All of them were brutally assaulted by him (OC in-charge) inside the Police Station not only by hands but he used ‘lathi’ to beat them. All their belongings including mobile phones, and wallet were taken by the police”, a statement submitted to the SP said.
HYC President Roy Kupar Synrem met Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills Rituraj Ravi and demanded immediate investigation into the incident.
Terming it as an abuse of power and highhandedness by police, Synrem stated that the council has demanded suspension of the second OC of Pynursla PS during the course of the inquiry.
