Shillong, March 14: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong on Thursday assured that the recruitment process for filling up over 3,000 vacant posts in the police department will be completed by the end of June, this year.
โI would like to assure that by the end of June 2025, by the first quarter of the next financial year 2025-2026, I am sure the process of recruitment will be completed,โ Tynsong said while replying to a cut motion in the Assembly.
The deputy chief minister said that the recruitment board has been tasked to complete the process at the earliest keeping in mind that shortage of manpower has to a great extent affected the functioning of the police department in the state.

He added that the problem has also affected the implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) in the state.
โWe have a shortage of manpower and therefore we could not really perform as prescribed by the Act. Therefore, once the recruitment process is completed, we will further strengthen each and every police station and outpost to comply with the Act to ensure that each and every citizen who comes from outside gets themselves registered. Verification has to be done by the respective police station, police outpost and thereafter this information has to be transferred to the district task committee which was already constituted and also which is all already in operation.โ
The deputy chief minister also mentioned that the delay in investigation and charge sheeting is also linked to the manpower issue.
โHowever, from the department, we are trying our best to make sure that investigation and charge sheeting be completed and the earliest as possible and we have discussed this issue. The DGP herself is also taking the whole responsibility of pursuing those pending cases, to reach a conclusion,โ he said.

On the issue of housing facility for police personnel, Tynsong informed that in the coming years the department has decided to shift the present housing complex of the Police from Khyndailad to New Shillong Township and the urban affairs department is in the process of finalising the land required by the police department.
โI am very sure, very soon will be able to get the land and once this is handed over to us. I am very sure that at least the grade four level employees should not suffer and at least a minimum requirement of two BHK should be provided according to the category of the employees.โ
Further, Tynsong informed that the department has written to the transport department on the need for a dedicated space in Shillong for keeping the accident vehicles.
โWe are also thinking of having it in every district. We will sit down with the respective District Transport Officers to provide the space,โ he stated.
