Shillong, Feb 25: Violence erupted in East Jaintia Hills, after the declaration of election results, with alleged supporters of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) attacking the home of a former village headman in Narwan village under Sutnga.

The VPP, which secured 8 seats, lost the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) elections to the National People’s Party (NPP), which won 13 seats.

According to police, the VPP supporters attacked the former headman’s house in retaliation for not supporting their party.

The incident involved stone-pelting and attempts to damage the house and harm its occupants.

The West Jaintia Hills police have deployed adequate forces to the village, and the situation is now under control.
