GUWAHATI, March 22: The Northeastern regional meeting of the National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees & Engineers (NCCOEEE) was held at ASEB Pensioners Bhawan, Sixmile, Guwahati, on Saturday. The meeting, attended by representatives from Assam, Meghalaya, and NTPC, focused on the ongoing challenges posed by privatisation in the power sector and the upcoming nationwide strike on June 26.
The meeting was organized by NCCOEEE and pensioners’ associations and was presided over by Bikramaditya Das. The event was inaugurated by Shailendra Dubey, chairman of the All India Power Engineers Federation, who highlighted the increasing privatization of the electricity sector in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Puducherry. Dubey specifically detailed the three-month-long struggle in Uttar Pradesh against the privatization of two major distribution companies, emphasizing how workers have stood firm despite government pressure.

Dubey pointed out that the uninterrupted, free-of-cost power supply at events like the Kumbh Mela is only possible due to the existence of public power utilities. He stressed the importance of preserving public ownership of the electricity sector and called for mass participation in the ‘Lucknow Chalo’ rally on April 8 to protest against these privatization moves.
PN Chowdhury, convener of NCCOEEE and vice president of the Electricity Employees Federation of India, presented a detailed report on the current state of India’s electricity sector. He expressed deep concern over the central government’s aggressive push to dismantle the public power sector, stating that these policies threaten both the workforce and the general public by prioritizing corporate interests over affordable electricity.
Chowdhury underscored the need to escalate the working-class struggle against these policies and pledged full support for the nationwide strike on May 20, called by Central Trade Unions and Sectoral Federations, in protest against anti-people policies and the implementation of the new labor codes.

A major resolution of the meeting was the establishment of a North Eastern Region Committee of NCCOEEE. The committee will include representatives from Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Sikkim. Wonderful Pakyntein was appointed as the convener, with one representative from each state serving as co-convener.
This move aims to strengthen regional coordination and amplify the collective voice against privatization while advocating for workers’ rights in the electricity sector. The committee will work towards mobilizing employees and engineers across the region, ensuring their participation in the nationwide strike on June 26.
The meeting concluded with a firm commitment to mobilize power sector employees for the nationwide strike on June 26. The strike will serve as a collective demonstration against the privatization of electricity distribution companies and the government’s policies that undermine public utilities. The NCCOEEE leaders urged all employees, pensioners, and trade unions to unite in this struggle to safeguard the future of India’s public power sector.
