Agartala, Mar 12: In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general parliamentary election, Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, the chief of the TIPRA Motha party and head of Tripura’s royal family, convened a crucial meeting with leaders representing various indigenous communities of the State.

The meeting, held at the Manikya Enclave in the Bholagiri Ashram area, aimed to address key issues related to the tribal populace, particularly in light of recent developments wherein Motha, until recently in the opposition, has aligned itself with the ruling BJP led government after signing a tripartite agreement at New Delhi with the centre and state government.

Attended by Pradyot and two of his sisters, one of whom is slated to contest the election from the East Tripura seat, the gathering emphasized discussions surrounding the rights of indigenous people as outlined in the recent tripartite agreement.

Pradyot reiterated the agreement’s commitment to safeguarding tribal cultures and languages, underscoring the importance of engaging with community leaders to uphold these provisions.

Although Pradyot denied finalization of any name regarding candidate selection during the meeting, he assured reporters that the ultimate decision would rest with him, promising a prompt resolution on the matter.

This announcement comes in the wake of Motha’s alliance with the BJP-led government, with a reported agreement to divide parliamentary seats between the two entities, marking the first such collaboration in electoral history.

While the BJP’s former Chief Minister and current Rajya Sabha member Biplab Kumar Deb is set to contest from the West Tripura constituency, candidate for the East Tripura seat is yet to be announce, leaving speculation rife.

With approximately 31 percent of Tripura’s population belonging to various tribal communities comprising 20 distinct groups, the outcome of this electoral collaboration holds significant implications for indigenous representation and governance in the region.
