Prestone backs ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal

Must read

Shillong, Dec 17: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong on Monday expressed full support to the Centre’s move for ‘one nation, one election’, which aims to conduct simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, followed by urban body and panchayat polls within 100 days.

The proposal, which was approved by the Union Cabinet last week, was based on the recommendations of a high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, which submitted a detailed report on the subject.

Sharing his thoughts on the issue, Tynsong, who is also the state president of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), said, “I think I will not reply on behalf of the party. My personal opinion, I would like to see the elections are held once, not twice or thrice, be it MP or be it MLA otherwise if you calculate the time consumption that we have specially in terms of model code of conducts is so much.”

“So, if we have one election, we would see that we save lots of time yes may be for two months or three months continuously but after that in five years only two or three months we have the model code of conduct but if we two or three elections, you understand the model code of conduct is minimum 45 days. If we have two elections 45+45 how many so my personal opinion I would prefer if it can be done if it is feasible that one nation, one election is preferable for me,” he opined.
