Shillong, Jan 3: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) Education Cell, along with the North Eastern Hills University Students’ Union (NEHUSU), staged a protest on Wednesday against the delayed release of students’ scholarships for the year 2022-2023 at the MBOSE office in Shillong.
Addressing the protest gathering, NEHUSU General Secretary Banpynbiang Riang expressed concern over the government’s delay in disbursing the scholarship funds, creating significant hurdles for students from less privileged backgrounds.
Riang added that this is not the first time the government has delayed scholarship releases; similar instances have occurred in previous years.
The aggrieved student union has issued a 10-day ultimatum to the government, demanding the release of scholarship funds. Failure to comply will lead to street protests, with the possibility of escalating the agitation by burning tyres as a form of protest.
It may be mentioned that Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma informed the state government on December 9 that the state government is awaiting the disbursement of the first installment of scholarships for the students from the Ministry of Minority, Government of India.
Minister Rakkam affirmed that the state government has completed all requisite formalities. The delay now rests with the Central Government, specifically the Ministry of Minority, responsible for sanctioning the funds.
