Tura, June 26: With the disturbing video of a woman being publicly flogged by a group of men in a remote part of Garo Hills going viral, more details have emerged since the video went viral with police taking action.
The place where the horrific incident took place has been identified as Lower Teksagre under Damal Asim Police Station in Dadenggre, West Garo Hills.
Once the video went viral, West Garo Hills District administration swiftly responded with Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani calling for a probe into the video clip. Police have summoned the Nokma (village chief) to provide testimony on the incident. They have also arrested two perpetrators while search is on for others involved. Also, the woman has been taken for medical check-up.
The incident occurred on Tuesday (June 25, 2024) on the premises of the village’s community hall.
A senior police official said action is being initiated against the culprits involved in the crime. “We will issue a statement in the evening,” the official added.
In the video, a young woman is being subjected to a public flogging in a medieval style of punishment. Atleast four men are seen mercilessly raining blows on the woman, pulling her hair violently, assaulting her continuously with bamboo sticks onto her back, showing no remorse or sympathy even as she cries and begs for the beating to stop.
What is even more difficult to bear is that the crowd mutely watches with no one showing any sympathy for the victim.
The shocking video has sent shockwaves through the society and many are having difficulty believing the video, especially when it is coming from Meghalaya, a state that follows matrilineal system and women are held in high esteem.
Many are of the opinion that irrespective of what the woman has done, such brutality is not acceptable in modern day. They could have filed a complaint instead of taking the law into their hands.
