New Delhi, Nov 24: In a major development, a Qatar court has accepted India’s appeal against the death penalty to eight former Indian Navy personnel, who were handed down a death sentence in an alleged case of espionage.
According to Sources, the Qatari court after hearing the appeal will will set a hearing date.
According to reports, in August 2022, the eight men were arrested by Qatar’s intelligence agency for spying. However, the Qatari authorities have not made any charges against them public yet. Several times, their bail petitions were rejected and the verdict against them was pronounced last month by the Court of First Instance in Qatar.
However, the Indian authorities are working to secure their release.

The arrested Indian Navy veterans are Commander Sanjeev Gupta, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Captain Navtej Singh Gill,Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Amit Nagpal, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, and Sailor Ragesh Gopakumar.
All the former Navy veterans have a service record of up to 20 years and has also held important positions including that of instructors in the force.
In a post on X, Meetu Bhargava, the sister of one of the former officers who has been detained asked for help from the government to bring her brother back. She had appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in a post on X on June 8.
“These Ex-Navy officers are the pride of the nation & again I request our Hon’ble Prime Minister with folded hands that it is high time that they all are brought back to India immediately without any further delay,” read her post, She even tagged PM Modi and Union ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh.
