Railway in Khasi-Jaintia Hills should be based on people’s choice: BJP’s AL Hek

Shillong, March 19: BJP leader and cabinet minister AL Hek on Tuesday said the proposed implementation of the railway projects in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region should be based on the choice of the people.

Speaking to media persons on the issue, Hek said, “That is the choice of the people. If the people want to have a railway, the railway should come and if people do not want the railway, (then the railway should not come). It is up to the choice of the people.”

His came as a reaction to the stiff opposition by NGOs against the government’s move to introduce a railway line in East Jaintia Hills District. Asked, Hek said, “I am telling you this is the interest of the state of Meghalaya not the party. We want to see for the benefit of the people of Meghalaya only.”

On the poor performance of the party in recently held ADC polls, the BJP leader said that it is the choice of the people. “We have put our own candidates but they cannot make it because it is the people’s choice. How we can tell whether people have voted or not voted for the party; I cannot say anything, it is their choice.”

Expressing concern over the traffic congestion in Shillong, the cabinet minister expressed, “It has become a nightmare for all people but the government is trying its best as much as possible.”

“As you are aware, expansion of roads in Shillong is very difficult so whatever is possible as vehicles are growing, it is coming to the road every now and then. We have to find out the best solution since the government is shifting offices to New Shillong. It will help to ease traffic congestion. It is one of the best decisions taken by the government,” he added.
