Tura, June 20: People living in the Bhaitari area of the Rajabala-Phulbari plains in West Garo Hills are experiencing chaotic scenes navigating the pothole ridden main road to commute owing to the continuous plying of trucks laden with boulders from Bhutan that has turned the highway into a nightmare for commuters.
To make matters worse, the past one week has been the wettest this season with heavy rains lashing the entire region making the situation more complicated for the public and turning the roads into water bodies.
The road, known as the Agia Medhipara Phulbari Tikrikilla road (AMPT) is the main entry into the West Garo Hills plains from Assam.
It is also a crucial economic corridor through which hundreds of boulder laden trucks from Bhutan cross enroute to Bangladesh as part of an economic agreement between Bhutan, India and Bangladesh.
But not everyone is happy with the arrangement- especially when it comes to the route the trucks ply on.
“Common people like us are the biggest sufferers because we have to use the road everyday and its condition is not suitable for any vehicle. Government should do something about this situation, ” complain locals from Bhaitbari.
A number of traders who have shops on the main road speak of the problems they face due to its lack of repairs.
“Customers find it difficult to come to our stores because of the bad condition of the road. It is also affecting our business,” says several traders.
A local politician from the area has blamed the North Eastern Council and the PWD North Division for the situation which he says has been deteriorating every month.

“The NEC and the PWD North Division is not taking interest in repairs. Small potholes are turning into giant craters because overloaded trucks are continuously plying over it whereas there is no repairs being done. Contractors are given the repair works only for show and officers are misusing the funds alloted to the department,” alleges local politician Sofior Rahman.
