Shillong, April 15: Lone Rajya Sabha MP Dr WR Kharlukhi on Tuesday assured to take up with the Centre on the need for the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) to implement 80:20 female-male ratio in the recruitment of nurses in the institute.

Speaking to reporters after meeting a delegation of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), Dr Kharlukhi said, “I told them (HYC) that I will meet the three MPs and try to take it up.

The main issue (raised by them) is about the appointment policy of NEIGRIHMS. Even in AIIMS also they are doing that 80:20 female-male ratio and other medical colleges have also done it so we will take it up (with the Centre).”

Earlier, HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem said that the delegation has requested the intervention of the Rajya Sabha MP to take up the issue with the Health Ministry for immediate implementation of the 80:20 female-male ratio in the recruitment of nurses in the NEIGRIHMS.

“We want him to take up the issue with the ministry. Since he is also representing a party, which is part of the NDA in Delhi, we want him to shoulder the responsibility on behalf of the people of the state. If AIIMS can implement the 80:20 female-male ratio, why NEIGRIHMS cannot implement such a policy.

We have submitted all our documents with a request to the MP that he should take these issues seriously so that it will not affect the candidates and also environment in NEIGRIHMS when it come to recruitment of nurses. He has assured during our meeting, he will be taking up these issues seriously,” Synrem said.

The issue was raised after NEIGRIHMS vide Advertisement dated January 22, 2025 had called for filling up of 105 Posts of Nursing Officers but the said Advertisement does not specify as to the ratio of female-to-male Nurses to be recruited.

Synrem informed that the NEIGRIHMS had written to the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare on July 9, 2024 seeking approval from the Ministry to implement the provision of 80:20 Female: Male nurses as adopted by the Central Institute Body of AIIMS, New Delhi as well as other Institutes or Undertaking of the Government of India like ESIC Hospitals including the Institute of National Importance like JIPMER where 80% posts of Nursing Officers are reserved for female Candidates.

However, the Ministry vide letter dated 08-08-2024 had replied that “NEIGRIHMS may be advised not to adopt provision of 80:20 (Female: Male) nurses as adopted by AIIMS, NEW Delhi”.

“This advice of the Ministry not only affects the administration of NEIGRIHMS but also affects the sentiments of the patients seeking medical assistance in the Institute,” he stated.

According to him, NEIGRIHMS has around 40 different departments/areas where Nursing Officers are being posted and only 3 of these departments are male wards.
