Guwahati, Dec 7: A rare black panther, injured in a road accident on the Roing-Tezu Trans-Arunachal Highway near Paya in Arunachal Pradesh, was rescued by the state Forest Department on Friday.
The animal, which sustained severe head injuries after being hit by a speeding vehicle while crossing the road, is currently under treatment at the Roing mini-zoo in Lower Dibang Valley.
Roing Divisional Forest Officer (Wildlife) Mito Rumi confirmed the rescue, stating, “Upon receiving information about the injured black panther, our team promptly transported the animal to the Roing mini-zoo. It was then taken to the veterinary hospital for a clinical procedure. After successful treatment, it was brought back to the mini-zoo, where it is being closely monitored. The animal is stable for now.”
The black panther is a melanistic variant of the leopard (Panthera pardus) and jaguar (Panthera onca), characterized by excess black pigmentation that darkens its fur while retaining the species’ distinctive rosette patterns.
These elusive big cats are primarily found in equatorial rainforests across Malaya, Mount Kenya, Java, Southwestern China, Myanmar, and Nepal. In India, they are mainly spotted in the forests of Kerala and Assam.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the panther’s condition as efforts are made to ensure its recovery.
