In a significant ornithological find, two young tourist guides, Pallab Prakash Saikia and Hemanta Gogoi, recently spotted the rare Blue-and-White Flycatcher (Cyanoptila cyanomelana) near the Panbari Reserve Forest in Kaziranga which is the first record for NE India. This striking bird, also known as the Japanese Flycatcher, is distinguished by the vibrant blue upperparts, contrasting white belly, and striking black mask of the male. Females are more subdued in appearance, featuring brown upper parts and a white underbelly.

A migratory species, the Blue-and-White Flycatcher breeds in East Asia—including Japan, Korea, parts of China, and Russia—and winters in Southeast Asia.

Its sighting in Kaziranga underscores the park’s ecological importance as a habitat for migratory birds.

In celebration of this rare sighting, Kaziranga National Park will officially relaunch the Panbari Bird Safari on February 2, 2025, coinciding with World Wetlands Day. The safari’s reopening after a decade marks a significant step toward promoting eco-tourism and wildlife conservation in the region.

The Panbari Bird Safari offers an exceptional opportunity for bird enthusiasts and researchers alike. The trail cuts through diverse ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, and grasslands, making it a hotspot for a wide variety of bird species, both resident and migratory. Notably, the area has one of the highest butterfly species counts recorded in the country.

To ensure minimal ecological disturbance, the safari will initially permit only three vehicles per day. This controlled approach provides a unique and sustainable experience for birdwatchers and researchers, helping preserve the delicate balance of the ecosystem.

With the discovery of the rare Blue-and-White Flycatcher as its centrepiece, the park invites nature lovers to witness the wonders of Kaziranga’s avian treasures.
