Record 37th batch of recruit constables pass out from Goeragre training centre

Tura, July 15: Meghalaya police force received a shot in the arm when 146 recruit constables passed out of the Armed Police Training Centre at 2nd MLP Battalion in Goeragre, near Tura, on Monday, with Meghalaya Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang taking the salute in a glittering ceremony witnessed by top police officers and families of the young men and women recruits who took the oath to protect the state and its people.

This was a record 37th batch of recruit constables to pass out of Goeragre and it also coincided with the maiden visit of Nongrang since taking charge as DGP of Meghalaya police.

Encouraging and advising the young recruits, Nongrang said that the journey would be long and challenging. “It will be a challenging journey that you as part of the police force will have to overcome and the skills you have been imparted with will help you in making the right choice,” said the DGP.

She also hailed the role of instructors for playing a crucial role in imparting the right sense of balance, adding that soft skills being imparted for the recruits are crucial in today’s world.

DGP Nongrang also took a moment to remember the men in uniform who laid down their lives in the line of duty.

Earlier, Commandant of the 2nd MLP Battalion J F K Marak presented a brief speech on the history of the battalion which has touched 42 years since its inception.

“The first batch of recruit constables passed out from this battalion on 5th December, and subsequently as many as 36 batches of recruits have passed out till date comprising a total of 3112 constables,” mentioned Commandant Marak.

He lauded the role of the recruit constables, many of whom came forward to donate blood to needy patients terming it a “noble gesture” on their part.

The 2nd MLP battalion was established on 13th of January, 1982 on a plot of land measuring 55.32 hectares, overlooking the Ganol River, about 13 Km from Tura. The site acquired was four Nokma A’king plots which at that time were mostly inhabited by wild animals and covered by thick bamboo forests.

The place was named Goeragre after the Garo God of Thunder – Goera by the pioneers of this camp S. Prasad, IPS, the then Superintendent of Police, Tura and former IGP, S. G. Momin, IPS. The Battalion was initially started with a skeleton force of 65 personnel with some experienced officers and men drawn from various other Units. Now the strength has risen to 929 personnel, comprising 7 (seven) service companies, and administrative platoons. The personnel of 2nd BN. MLP have been deployed all over the state for various Law & Order duties.

On the 3rd of November, 2008 this Battalion was designated as an Armed Police Training Center to cater to the training needs of the Meghalaya Police. The Training center conducts the Basic Training for Recruit Constables and other Courses, such as Jungle Warfare, Counter Insurgency Operations, Pre-Promotion Cadre Course in Service Training Courses, like Riot Drill and Crowd Control Drill, Short Term Arms Training for Forest Guards among others.

The Battalion runs a 16 bedded Unit Hospital which besides the Bn. personnel also caters to the needs of nearby villages. A Welfare tailoring Center, Unit Canteen (CPC), English School and a Garo Medium School, Fisheries, Unit Horticulture Garden, among other welfare initiatives form part of the activities of the battalion.
