Shillong, April 21: In a big sigh of relief for Jowai town and its residents, a landowner from East Jaintia Hills District has agreed to give his land for use as a temporary landfill for dumping the garbage which has been piling up at Iawmusiang market since February this year.

A deed of agreement was signed on Wednesday between the landowner and resident of Moolamylliang, Damewanhii L Rymbai and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Jowai Municipal Board for use of his land as a temporary dumping site for a period of one month.

The board has been in dire need of a land to be used temporarily as a dumping site as tons of garbage has been piling up at Iawmusiang after stiff opposition from different villages for dumping of garbage from Jowai at Mynjkai, a temporary landfill.

The landlord who happens to own and possess a land situated at Moolamylliang known as Pynsymroo under East Jaintia Hills, was approached by the JMB through its CEO where he ultimately agreed, understanding the problems faced by the residents of Jowai town.

According to the agreement, the board has agreed to pay Rs 700 only per trip as a token of royalty to the landlord for their benevolent act.

The dumping yard/pit will be used for a period of one month for the time being. However, extension of the period can be done by mutual agreement and understanding, it said.

The agreement said the board has to prepare the dumping yard on its own expenses along with the approach road leading to the dumping site.

The board will have to adhere to the keeping and maintaining of the dumping yard and not litter randomly.

It is the sole responsibility of the JMB to check and provide barriers in and around the site to safeguard the property and more so, to check the infiltration of animals.

The board should provide a care-taker for the dumping site. The board will have to maintain proper hygiene while dumping so as to avoid unwanted foul smell and flies that result from unhygienic way of dumping or disposing, the agreement said.
