Tura, May 27: On Sunday night at approximately 10:30 PM, a large tree was uprooted by strong winds and heavy rain in Chandmari, Tura, causing significant disruptions. The tree fell across the road leading towards the Catholic church, bringing down electrical cables which led to power cut in the area.
The heavy rainfall and gusty winds, caused the tree to topple and snapped the electrical lines. This led to an immediate power outage, affecting residents and nearby establishments.
The Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL) dispatched a team to the site to assess the damage. The team immediately worked through the night to clear the debris and repair the damaged cables. “Our priority is to restore electricity as quickly as possible,” said a spokesperson from MePDCL. The power was reinstated.
While no injuries were reported, the incident.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Shillong has issued warning for heavy rainfall and winds in several districts of Meghalaya over the next 24 hours. Isolated places in Eastern West Khasi Hills, East Garo Hills, North Garo Hills, Ri Bhoi, South Garo Hills, and West Garo Hills are expected to experience severe weather conditions.
The IMD has predicted wind speeds of 40-50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph, accompanied by heavy rainfall. These conditions pose potential risks, including localized flooding and damage to infrastructure.
The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has urged citizens to remain cautious and take necessary precautions.
