Renowned filmmaker, poet, and activist Tarun Bhartiya passes away at 54

Shillong, Jan 25: Tarun Bhartiya, a celebrated documentary filmmaker, poet, social activist, and artist, passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 54 due to a heart attack at Woodland Hospital in Shillong.

Bhartiya, survived by his wife Angela Rangad and their three children, leaves behind an enduring legacy of art, activism, and cultural contributions. Born of Maithil origins yet deeply connected to the Khasi Hills, his work transcended boundaries, blending artistic expression with social consciousness.

An acclaimed filmmaker, Bhartiya’s works, such as The Brief Life of Insects (2015) and The Last Train in Nepal (2015), delved into humanity’s complex relationship with politics and the environment, earning prestigious awards like the Royal Television Society honors. His films served as urgent calls to confront pressing social and environmental challenges.

As an editor, Bhartiya shaped many iconic projects. His editing earned him the National Award for Best Editing in 2009 for In Camera: Diaries of a Documentary Cameraman, an honor he returned in 2015 to protest rising fascist tendencies in India.

A prolific poet, Bhartiya’s Hindi poetry resonated deeply, appearing in anthologies like Dancing Earth: Contemporary Poetry from Northeast India. His photography chronicled Meghalaya’s socio-cultural landscape, offering compelling visual narratives.

Tarun Bhartiya’s voice, both in art and activism, will continue to resonate. His unwavering commitment to justice and storytelling stands as a testament to a life lived with purpose and passion.
