SHILLONG, Aug 23: Renowned lawyer and social activist Kynjaimon Amse died while three others were critical injured in a tragic car crash incident in East Jaintia Hills.
The incident took place at Dkhiah near petrol pump, district SP Giri Prasad said on Friday.
The four injured occupants were taken to Khliehriat civil hospital.
“However, one of the injured victims namely Kynjaimon Amse, resident of Umkiang village was declared brought dead and the other three have been given medical treatment and being referred to other higher medical centre for further treatment,” Prasad said.
Amse was known for his contribution through filing public interest litigations (PILs) to address various issues concerning the people of East Jaintia Hills.
It was based on his PIL that the Meghalaya High Court had directed the state government for immediate construction of Borkhat – Sonapur road along the Indo-Bangla border.
Earlier in 2020, Amse as spokesperson of the four villages – Hingaria, Huroi, Lahalein and Lejri – having a population of more than 5,000 – had led the demand for both the Centre and state government to allow them to be part of Bangladesh as a mark of protest against the government’s failure to construct the Borkhat-Sonapur road, which was left in a pathetic condition for past many years.
The Court had also passed directions for immediate repairing of the dilapidated condition of the National Highway – 6 especially from Ratacherra to Lumshnong as well as the deplorable Jowai byepass.
A week ago, the young law had also filed a complaint opposing the JHADC’s decision to issue a No Objectin Certificate to M/S Meghatop Cement Private Limited in Wahiajer village, Narpuh for setting up its plant withot the consent of the Dorbar Elaka Narpuh.
