Reopening of Them Iew Mawlong road unrelated to relocation of residents: Paul Lyngdoh

Must read

Shillong, Nov 5: Cabinet Minister and government spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh on Tuesday said the reopening of the Them Iew Mawlong road has nothing to do with the resolution to relocate the 342 families from the area.

Speaking to media persons, Lyngdoh termed the decision of government as ‘practical’ in view of the traffic congestion and the general inconveniences caused to the members of the public for the past 6 years.

“I don’t see any link between that and the resolution of the current imbroglio vis-a-vis the relocation of the sweepers,” he said.

Lyngdoh was reacting to the apprehension expressed by NGOs and political parties that the reopening of the road would further delay the relocation of the residents from Them Iew Mawlong.

The road has been reopened with effect from November 4.

“In fact… for the past six years is that things are not in order that area is a troubled zone but today we have removed that image by normalizing movement of people and pedestrians and vehicles in that area. So, it’s a very important positive steps taken towards decongesting the entire city. You know the traffic scenario as it is today and it is not at all link (to the issue),” the minister stated.

Lyngdoh further added, “The state government has reiterated time and again that it would resolve this matter and we are committed to that. The reopening of Them Iew Mawlong has nothing to do with the resolution of the issue.”
