Aizawl, Feb 20: A fully grown male serow was rescued by the DCF Wildlife Division on Tuesday from the outskirts of Aizawl, Mizoram.
The serow, Mizoram’s state animal, sustained severe injuries after becoming trapped on the side of a cliff at Hualngohmun, near Aizawl. Despite efforts by the forest department to save it, the animal succumbed to its injuries and was declared dead at around 11:00 am on Wednesday.
An official from the DCF Wildlife Division stated that multiple gunshot wounds—both fresh and old—were found on various parts of the serow’s body.
“We believe that due to the gunshot injuries, it fell from the cliff, resulting in broken bones in its hind legs and tail,” the official said.
The serow is protected under Schedule I of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and is classified as ‘Vulnerable’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
Serows (genus Capricornis) are goat-like mammals found across Japan, Taiwan, eastern China, Southeast Asia, the Himalayan region, and as far west as India. They belong to the tribe Rupicaprini, commonly referred to as goat-antelopes.
