Revival of Moh-Juj: Traditional Buffalo fight returns to Assam after nine-year ban, draws thousands of spectators

Guwahati, Jan 17: After a nine-year prohibition, the long-awaited revival of the traditional buffalo fight, locally known as Moh-Juj, unfolded on Wednesday (January 16) in Ahatguri, Morigaon district, Assam. Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and other dignitaries graced the event, attracting huge crowd of spectators.

Local residents joyfully welcomed the resurgence of Buffalo Fights in the area.

These fights, deeply ingrained in Assam’s local culture, carry significant importance during the mid-January Magh Bihu celebrations, featuring organized combat between two male buffaloes.

Despite a previous ban influenced by the 2014 Supreme Court ruling on jallikattu in Tamil Nadu, reports indicate that the state government has opted to allow buffalo and bulbul fights during this year’s Magh Bihu celebrations.

To ensure the well-being of animals and prevent cruelty, the government issued a stringent Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) on December 27. According to the SOP, permission for organising such events will be granted solely in places with a documented history of hosting such activities for at least 25 years.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma while addressing the media, said that the revival of buffalo fights aligns with an age-old tradition. He emphasised the importance of ensuring the well-being of the buffalo, and organisers echoed this commitment, stating that no physical harm is inflicted on any of the animals during the event.
