Ri Bhoi, Nov 27: In response to growing safety concerns, District Magistrate Abhilash Baranwal has issued a directive prohibiting public access to the area surrounding the New Umtru Hydroelectric Project (HEP) in Byrnihat.
This decision follows reports of the site becoming a popular gathering spot, especially on weekends and holidays, which has led to significant safety risks, including several drowning incidents in the past.
The order, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, is aimed at preventing further accidents and ensuring the safety of the public. The restricted zone includes the area around the hydroelectric project as well as its downstream flood zone.
District Magistrate Baranwal stressed the urgency of implementing preventive measures to avoid further tragedies. He warned that violators of the order would face legal consequences under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
Enforcement of this order will be carried out by the Ri Bhoi District Police, in collaboration with officials from the Additional Chief Engineer (C), HP, MePGCL, Umiam, the Chief Engineer (HP&HC), MePGCL, Shillong, and the Block Development Officer of Umling C & RD Block.
Authorities have called on the public to respect the directive to ensure the safety of all.
