Shillong, Feb 13: The Young Mind Association (YMA), an organization dedicated to youth welfare in Ri Bhoi, erected a life-size statue of former Chief Minister Dr. D D Lapang at Ri Bhoi College, Nongpoh, on Tuesday.
The motive behind the YMA’s decision to erect the statue of Dr. Lapang is to honor his dedication and contributions to the upliftment of Ri Bhoi District and the State as a whole.
Dr. Lapang himself unveiled the life-size statue in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Cabinet Minister Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh, MLA Mayralborn Syiem, and MLA Charles Marngar.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Lapang commended the Young Mind for honoring him with the statue, which will stand as a lasting tribute, and encouraged leaders and attendees with his motto, “we are born to serve.”
It is worth mentioning that Dr. Lapang began his life as daily wage labour and worked his way up to become a Sub-Inspector of schools. He was elected as MLA from Nongpoh as an independent candidate in 1972. Later, from 1992 to February 1993, he served as the Chief Minister of the state. After winning the election again, he assumed office as Chief Minister in March 2003.
Lapang was sworn in as Chief Minister for the third time on 10 March 2008 and for the fourth time on May 2009.
The four times former Chief Minister of Meghalaya had received four doctorate degrees from various institutions in the country for his contributions to the society and its development in his career spanning several decades.
