Nongpoh, Oct 28: In response to a series of fatal road accidents caused by reckless driving across Ri Bhoi District, the Ri Bhoi Traffic Branch conducted a surprise checking on Sunday at various points on National Highway 6. The checking resulted in fines totalling upto Rs. 32,000, including those engaged in stunts, riders without protective gear, and individuals lacking proper vehicle documentation.
The vehicle checking comes after reports of frequent Sunday accidents, many involving groups of motorcyclists performing stunts on sharp bends and curves along the highway.
The district has seen a spike in accidents attributed to risky riding behaviours, particularly among two-wheeler riders who reportedly use NH-6 as a stunt track, especially on weekends. Concerned by this dangerous trend, Ri Bhoi District Traffic Branch has launched an enforcement campaign targeting stunt bikers and traffic law violators.
The police have issued a stern warning to motorcyclists, particularly those riding on Sundays, to refrain from stunt activities on highways. Offenders caught performing stunts or violating traffic regulations will face penalties as part of the district’s ongoing efforts to ensure road safety and reduce accidents.
