Nongpoh/Shillong, Sept 11: In a major breakthrough, Ri Bhoi District Police arrested four individuals allegedly involved in a series of robberies along National Highway 6 (NH 6) for the past few months. The arrests come after a robbery incident in the early hours of Wednesday, in which a Mahindra pickup truck loaded with fish was intercepted, and the driver was assaulted and robbed of cash and mobile phones.
The incident occurred around 1:16 AM at Shangbangla on NH 6. Informing the police about the robbery, the driver of the pickup truck, Abu Sadek, and his co-passenger MD Dildar Hussain, both hailing from Morigaon, Assam, reported that while they were coming towards Nongpoh side, one vehicle (AS 01 FN 4202) Alto intercepted them at Shangbangla, and attacked them and took away cash and mobile phones.
Responding swiftly, a mobile patrolling party was alerted and search was conducted in the likelihood areas. After a while, the patrolling party spotted the Alto near Pahemsyiem and SI SR Marak with his team chased and intercepted the vehicle near treasury office and detained the said car and apprehended one Ricky Tangsang (26), of Sajer village in Nongpoh, but another miscreant by the name of Mustafa Lyngdoh managed to escape.
Later on, with the help of the Special Team of Ri Bhoi police along with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, Mustafa Lyngdoh (32), of Umlyngkdait village, and two other miscreants – Shem Warjri (27) of Umsning Proper A and Kyrshanbor Marwein (22) of Mawroh, Nongpoh – were apprehended, the SP said.
The police also seized two vehicles used in the robbery: a Maruti Alto with the registration number AS 01 FN 4202 and a white Bolero without a number plate. In addition, 6 mobile phones and Rs 6,750 cash was also seized from them.
Ri Bhoi District Superintendent of Police, Jagpal Singh Dhanoa, confirmed the arrests and stated that a case has been registered at Nongpoh Police Station. The arrested individuals have been booked under various robbery-related charges, and further investigations are ongoing.
The robbery on NH-6, which has seen an increase in such incidents in recent months, has created fear among truck drivers, particularly those transporting goods at night.
