Ri Bhoi PWD’s casual workers demand implementation of provisions under Meghalaya Regular Casual Workers Scheme

Shillong, Sept 6: The Ri Bhoi Progressive PWD Workers’ Union (RBPPWU) on Tuesday demanded the State government to implement the provisions of the Meghalaya Regular Casual Workers Scheme, 1996, for the benefits of casual workers in the state, especially of the Ri-bhoi district.

The Union informed that a Charter of Demand has been submitted to Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Minister in-charge of PWD Building Dasakhiat Lamare and to T.G. Nengnong, the secretary of the P.W.D (Roads and Buildings).

Napoleon Mawphniang, the Legal Advisor of RBPPWU, said the union has submitted the list of demands which includes the fulfillment of all statutory obligations and legal entitlements as per law like the implementation of Providential Fund (PF), Overtime Allowance, Gratuity, Accident compensation, Maternity Benefits, Travelling Allowance and Dearness Allowance.

“We demand for immediate implementation of mandatory social security mechanisms such as Creche, Day Care Centre facilities and constitution and notification of an Internal Complaints Committee as stipulated by the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013,” said Mawphniang.

He further informed that the union had also demanded to provide basic utilities such as masks, gloves, sanitizers, aprons and cleaning safety kits, raincoats, rubber boots and all safety kits/tools to all workers twice a year.

Mawphniang urged the state government to consider the Charter of Demands (CoD) for the betterment of workers and department as a whole failing which the union would resort to democratic protest(s).
