Dibrugarh, Nov 6: Due to rising Brahmaputra water levels, the Dibrugarh district administration has restricted Chhath Puja celebrations at two major river ghats—Mohanaghat and Kachari Ghat—where similar measures were implemented last year.
Samujjwal Borah, Circle Officer of Dibrugarh East Revenue Circle, announced on Wednesday that devotees could use five designated ghats for the festival this year. “We have authorised Panchali Ghat, Paltan Bazar Ghat, Tinkunia Ghat, Maijan Thakurbari Ghat, and Sessa Ghat for Chhath Puja celebrations. Safety remains our top priority,” said Borah.
The administration has ramped up preparations to ensure safe celebrations, with workers cleaning the approved ghats and setting up safety barricades along the riverbanks. Many devotees are also planning to create small, water-filled ponds at home to maintain the sacred rituals in a safe environment.
The four-day Chhath Puja, dedicated to the Sun God, holds deep religious significance and traditionally draws thousands of devotees. Dibrugarh District Commissioner Bikram Kairi has urged devotees to cooperate by celebrating at the authorised ghats, ensuring both safety and respect for the festival’s traditions.
