Shillong, April 20: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Silchar railway station recently rescued 450 live frogs during an early‑morning inspection.

Acting on a tip‑off, at around 8 A.M. on April 14, patrol officers from the Silchar RPF Post, under the Lumding Division of Northeast Frontier Railway, noticed three unattended bags on Platform 1. When opened, each bag contained roughly 150 frogs, packed alive for illicit transport. No one came forward to claim the luggage.

The amphibians were transferred to the Divisional Forest Officer, Barak Valley Wildlife Division, for rehabilitation and further legal action.

The seizure highlights the RPF’s expanding role in protecting wildlife along India’s rail network, alongside its core mandate of passenger and property security. Northeast Frontier Railway said it will maintain heightened vigilance and continue working with environmental agencies to curb wildlife trafficking.
