Sacred Heart Church in Williamnagar draws devout crowds on solemn Good Friday observance

Must read

Williamnagar, April 18: On a day that marks the profound sorrow and ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the Sacred Heart Church in Williamnagar witnessed a large gathering of faithful as they came together to observe Good Friday with solemn devotion and spiritual reflection.

As Christians across the globe commemorated the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ, the Sacred Heart Church stood as a beacon of faith and unity. The day began with many parishioners arriving early in the morning for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, commonly known as confession. According to Catholic teaching, confessing one’s sins is an essential step in preparing spiritually to fully participate in the mysteries of Christ’s passion and death.

The highlight of the morning was the Way of the Cross (also known as the Stations of the Cross), a powerful devotion that re-enacts the final hours of Jesus’ journey to Calvary. The church premises were filled with the faithful, young and old, solemnly following the 14 stations, each representing a significant moment from Christ’s condemnation to His burial. This tradition, deeply rooted in Catholic spirituality, allows believers to meditate on the suffering of Christ and unite their own struggles with His.

Led by the parish priest Fr. Anthony Tekanath and members of the church’s lay ministry, the faithful walked in prayer and contemplation, some barefoot as a sign of penance and humility. Hymns, Scripture readings, and moments of silence filled the atmosphere, turning the church grounds into a sacred space of mourning and grace.

In Catholic belief, Good Friday is not merely a day of remembrance but a call to enter into the mystery of God’s love revealed through the Cross. It is a day of fasting, prayer, and deep sorrow, yet it also anticipates the hope of resurrection that comes with Easter.

Speaking on the occasion, the parish priest emphasized the significance of the Cross in the life of a believer. “Good Friday reminds us that through suffering and death, Jesus redeemed the world. His love was unconditional, and His sacrifice was for all of humanity. We are called to carry our own crosses with faith and perseverance.”

The service concluded with veneration of the Cross, where parishioners came forward to touch or kiss the crucifix — an act symbolizing love and gratitude for Christ’s sacrifice.
