Safe Motherhood transit home inaugurated at Asanang PHC in Garo Hills

Tura, August 12: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday inaugurated a safe motherhood transit home at Asanang under Rongram block in West Garo Hills.

The transit home has been set up by the Govt as part of the Chief Minister’s Safe Motherhood Scheme.

The State Health Policy 2021 has identified Maternal mortality to be of a major concern having 248 maternal deaths in the year 2020-21. The Chief Minister’s Safe Motherhood scheme (CM-SMS) aims to supplement the ongoing initiatives for bringing down the maternal mortality in an accelerated manner.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said that Govt has accorded priority on care for pregnant mother through the MOTHER programme and the safe motherhood scheme aims at increasing institutional deliveries and reducing maternal deaths to a minimum.

He informed that the scheme has Four main components – a. Setting up Transit Home for high risk mothers. Provide them food and space for their kids.

b. Arranging Transport involving local entrepreneurs for pick up and drop of mothers and their family members.

c. Encourage Husbands or family members to accompany the mother and stay with them – wage compensation up to Rs.1,000 per person.

d. Award for the Best performing village under each PHC – once in a year.

He also informed that 80 PHCs have already completed setting up transit homes in the State.

84 PHCs have arranged for vehicle support and a total of 36 crores has been earmarked for the scheme by dovetailing other programs including JSY and JSSK as well.

He also informed that the program tries to create a full 360 degree support for the mother as the State has made it a matter to focus on the health of every single MOTHER and CHILD.

He told that the maternal deaths have come down over 35% in the last six months in compared to previous year.

“The Infant mortality is at 29 points against national average of 28 for the year 2020-21. We strive to bring it down to less than national average soon.”, he added.
