Salesian Youth Movement Team wins P.A. Sangma Memorial Basketball 2025

Tura, March 4: The Salesian Youth Movement (SYM) team won the first edition of the P.A. Sangma Memorial Basketball Tournament 2025.

SYM clashed against Sangkni in a thrilling final match on Tuesday at Don Bosco College, Tura.

From the opening jump ball, SYM maintained a decent lead until the second quarter. However, in the third quarter, Sangkni fought back and secured a seven-point lead against SYM.

SYM made a tremendous comeback in the fourth quarter, eventually registering a commanding 69-62 victory over Sangkni to claim the coveted title.

The tournament champions, SYM, took home the trophy along with a cash prize of ₹50,000, while runners-up Sangkni received ₹25,000 and a trophy.

The Player of the Match award went to SYM’s Renaldy Jyrwa, while the Player of the Tournament title was awarded to Arbas Ali Shah of team SYM.

Organized by the Tura Basketball Club, the tournament featured 12 teams from across Meghalaya. Each team was allowed to bring players from outside the state, particularly national-level players, to provide much-needed exposure and enhance the overall performance of local players.

The tournament followed a round-robin format, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the knockout stage, ultimately leading to the final showdown.

Sponsored by the Chief Minister’s Special Grant, the tournament also received support from the West Garo Hills District Administration and the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council. It was co-sponsored by Nivia Sports Pvt. Ltd., The Meghalaya Express, and Hub News.

West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani graced the event as the Chief Guest, alongside Raymond Sangma, Vice Chairman of the Meghalaya Mineral Development Corporation, as the Guest of Honour. Other dignitaries included Assistant Commissioner Chaitanya Awasthi, BCCI Video Analyst Salmitmat Marak, and Rev. Fr. Januarius S. Sangma, SDB, Principal of Don Bosco College.
