Section 144 CrPC, night curfew in Tura to be withdrawn from Friday morning

Tura, July 27: The District Administration of West Garo Hills has decided to withdraw Section 144 of CrPC from Tura town with effect from Friday morning, effectively also ending the night curfew in the town.

In an order passed on Thursday, West Garo Hills District Magistrate Jagdish Chelani said Section 144 CrPC will be withdrawn from 5 AM onwards of July 28, 2023 since the situation in and around Tura has returned to normal.

Declaring the situation in Tura town as normal and stable, the order said, “WHEREAS, it has been brought to the notice of the undersigned that the situation in and around Tura Town is stable and normal; WHEREAS, no reports of anti-social elements were found which could jeopardize the peace and tranquillity in Tura Town.”

“THEREFORE NOW, I Shri. Jagdish Chelani, IAS, District Magistrate, West Garo Hills, Tura, hereby withdraw the enforcement of Section 144 C.r.P.C imposed vide order No. PA/OC/14/2006/258 Dated Tura, the 24th July, 2023 w.e.f from 0500 hrs (5 AM) tomorrow i.e. 28th July, 2023,” Chelani said in the order.

Furthermore, the BSF armed forces that were requisitioned to be present in Tura have been withdrawn with immediate effect.

It may be mentioned here that Curfew and Section 144 was clamped on Tura town following attack on CM’s Mini Secretariat on July 24 when Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma was holding a meeting with ACHIK, GSMC and other groups on their demand and to end their hunger strike that they had been staging for 2 weeks.
