SHILLONG, Sept 12: The Shillong Press Club witnessed heavy deployment of security on Thursday morning ahead of a press conference by Brahmachari Mukundanand, representative of Jagatguru Shandkaracharya Swami Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati Ji Maharaj scheduled at 1 pm.

The police action was prompted before the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) arrived outside the Shillong Press Club’s premises to stage a protest against the said organization.

Activists of the HYC led by its president Roy Kupar Synrem were stopped by the police and were questioned if they intended to create law and order.

Synrem said that the HYC has no intention to stop the organization from holding the press conference but only to question their objective.

“This is because we have watched them how they have given statements in Arunachal and Nagaland that their intention is to bring a ban on cow slaughter and beef consumption. Here in Meghalaya, beef is something which we consume and they cannot come here and dictate what we eat. So we want to understand their point of view,” he said.

He further maintained “any plan to organize a rally in Meghalaya, we won’t allow.”

He also warned the government to not give any permission to the Hindu group to hold any rally. If the government allows then the HYC will also hold a beef eating festival on the same day.
