Seiñraij Higher Secondary School marks 60 years of educational excellence

Jowai, Dec 11: The Diamond Jubilee celebration of Seiñraij Higher Secondary School in Jowai concluded on Wednesday with a message of hope and progress for the region.

The event was graced by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar as the Chief Guest and Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla as the Guest of Honour.

Established in 1964 in a humble Assam-type house, Seiñraij Higher Secondary School has grown into a beacon of education in the Jaiñtia Hills. Over the years, it has nurtured countless individuals who have excelled in various fields.

Speaking at the celebration, Deputy CM Dhar commended the school for its unwavering dedication to education. “Diamond Jubilee is a milestone in its own way as providing education for 60 continuous years is highly appreciated,” Dhar said. He further underscored that teaching as a profession may pay meagre salary but it creates a major impact in shaping students’ lives, who strive for a brighter future.

Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla highlighted the growing importance of Jaintia Hills in governance, with Sñiawbhalang Dhar representing the region as the Deputy Chief Minister. He acknowledged the growing recognition of the Jaiñtia Hills in state projects, a shift from the traditional focus on Shillong and Tura.

Elucidating on the developmental works in Jowai, he shared that from just Rs. 20 lakhs annually from MUDA a few years ago, the funding last year reached Rs. 5 crores and has increased to Rs. 8 crores this year.

He also outlined the government’s decision to prioritize support for private schools rather than establishing new ones.

Meanwhile, the Deputy CM also addressed key demands outlined in a memorandum presented by the school, assuring stakeholders that pressing issues will be discussed with MLA Shylla and the School Management Committee. Dhar underlined the government’s commitment to resolving challenges critical to the school’s future.

The event also honoured the contributions of former teachers and key figures, including S. Ram Paswet, a founding member and former headmaster.
