Guwahati, Mar 14: Assam Congress leader Suruj Dehingia joined the Bharatiya Janata Party after being denied a ticket for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The senior Congress leader had a demand to contest from the Jorhat constituency, where Congress named Gaurav Gogoi. Dehingia joined at the BJP’s state headquarters in Guwahati on Wednesday, in the presence of Rajya Sabha MP Pabitra Margherita and other ministers.
Interestingly, the Assam Congress expelled Dehingia without citing a reason. Gaurav Gogoi, the Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha, will contest against incumbent BJP MP Topon Kumar Gogoi in the Jorhat seat.
It needs to be mentioned that out of Assam’s 14 Lok Sabha seats, Congress announced candidates for 12, offering the Dibrugarh seat to Assam Jatiya Parishad. The BJP named 11 candidates, reserving three for allies AGP and UPPL.
It is noteworthy that the current Lok Sabha has nine BJP MPs from Assam, while allies AGP and UPPL have none. The Congress holds three seats, AIUDF one, and one Independent.
