Agartala, May 3: As Tripura grapples with a scorching heat wave sweeping across the region, Sepahijala Zoological Park, situated in Sepahijala district, has rolled out a series of initiatives to safeguard the health and comfort of the resident animals.
In response to the sweltering temperatures, the zoo has implemented a comprehensive plan encompassing various preventive and emergency measures.
These include providing electrolyte-rich fluids, erecting cooling shades, sprinkling cool water, ice cubes and offering frozen fruit and vegetable treats to the captive animals beside installing air coolers in a few cages.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, zoo authorities are ensuring that seasonal fruits such as watermelons, cucumbers, and gourds are readily available to keep the animals hydrated and cool.
To directly combat heat stress, ice cubes and cold-water splashes are being used, while shades have been installed in all cages, with air coolers deployed in select enclosures to maintain a comfortable environment for the animals.
Close monitoring by the zoo veterinarian ensures prompt intervention with oral rehydration solutions and other measures to prevent dehydration among the animals.
Additionally, regular water level adjustments in enclosures guarantee a constant supply of fresh, cool water, further aiding the animals in coping with the heat.
For herbivores and omnivores, easily digestible frozen treats containing seasonal fruits are being provided during cooler periods of the day, such as early mornings or evenings. Similar meals are available in the second half of the day when it becomes a little cooler.
Innovative enrichment activities, including access to pools, ice, and interactive games, are also being introduced by zookeepers to help lower body temperatures and enhance the animals’ well-being.
Visitors have appreciated the various initiatives of the zoo authorities towards reducing the heat and stress of the animals.
These proactive measures underscore the Sepahijala Zoological Park’s commitment to ensuring the safety and comfort of its captive animals during the ongoing heat wave.
